Saint-Malo’s history stretches back to the 1st century B.C., but the citadel was a much later addition. Roam around fortifications that were created in the 12th century by Bishop Jean de Chatillon. The citadel was almost entirely destroyed during the bombing raids of 1944 and it took almost 30 years to restore the city to its former medieval appearance.
Stroll around the restored ramparts of the city, made from gray granite and standing at 12 feet (4 meters) tall. The outline of the citadel walls remain largely intact, so you can follow the trail of the walls for just over 1 mile (2 kilometers) around the town.
The citadel contains some of the most exciting attractions in all of Saint-Malo. Visit the Castle of Saint-Malo, which today hosts the city hall and a museum dedicated to the history of the town.
