Be amazed by the abundance of gold leaf décor spread across this Baroque gem and explore the relics in the small museum.

With its Baroque décor and impressive works of art, Santo António Church is one of the highlights of Lagos. It is a majestic religious structure from the 1700s known for the gilded woodwork and azulejo panels of glazed blue ceramic tiles that line its interior walls. Look around this resplendent ecclesiastical jewel for a sense of its history and grandeur.

Take photos of the white façade, with its strong pediment and twin towers of different heights. Enter through the brown portal and find yourself in the lavish nave. The inside of the church is decorated largely in gold leaf. Inspect the dazzling 18th-century azulejo panels of blue and white shades.

Marvel at the rococo gilded woodwork and gaze up at the wooden vaulted ceiling. The church also has carvings and paintings of ecclesiastical figures. Beasts, cherubs and other creatures are among the portrayed subjects. Inspect the extraordinary statue of St. Elói, the patron saint of goldsmiths. Nearby is the statue of St. António with baby Jesus in his arms. It stands on the altar throne and is flanked by two angels carrying torches.

Look around the church’s small museum for intriguing religious artifacts. Purchase postcards and other souvenirs from the gift shop.

Note that the initial church was constructed in 1707, before it was rebuilt in 1769 following an earthquake. It was a place of worship for military personnel before they set off on journeys.

The museum and church are open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from morning until late afternoon, with a small break at lunchtime. Photography is not permitted within the church. The museum has an entry fee.

Find Santo António Church at the southern end of the historic center of Lagos. Arrive at the Lagos Railway Station and walk southwest for 20 minutes to get here. Visit other area highlights, such as the Edge of the Port, Ponta de Bandeira Fort and Constitution Garden.
