Sant'Ana Church Tours

Sant\'Ana Church showing general coastal views and a bay or harbor

Appreciate the works of art in the nave and the wonderful views from this church dating back to the whaling era.

Sant’Ana Church is a quaint colonial gem with a whitewashed façade and blue painted features. The historic ecclesiastical structure dates back to the 18th century and has an intriguing past entwined with the Portuguese era. Gaze up at the charming bell tower that gives the church façade its uneven appearance.

Climb to the base of this elevated church for a stunning viewpoint of the adjacent Ossos Beach (Bones Beach), given its name for the whaling that went on here. Snap photos of the surrounding green cliffs and sparkling bay, adorned with colorful schooners and fishing boats.

Admire the elegant architecture of the church, which was founded by Portuguese settlers in 1740. On clear days the whitewashed façade stands out dazzlingly against the blue sky. Enter the church via its blue door, which is flanked by palm trees and plants. Inspect the range of religious works of art that decorate the walls of the nave.

Listen to the legend of Saint Anne, whose image was allegedly found by fishermen at sea. It is said that fishing was far more productive following the discovery. Hear how the image apparently turned to face the Atlantic Ocean at night, during the construction of the church.

Discover the old slave graveyard at the back of the church and make your way around the serene grounds. Attend a Mass on Saturday night for a glimpse into the local culture and customs. With its stunning vista, the church is a popular location for weddings and other ceremonies.

Find Sant’Ana Church in the northeastern crook of the headland jutting out from Búzios into the Atlantic Ocean. Walk northeast from the town center of Búzios for 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) to arrive here in about 20 minutes. Go to other attractions in the area, such as Ossos Beach, the Porto Veleiro Búzios and the Juscelino Kubitschek Statue.
