Sands Point Preserve Tours

Sands Point Preserve showing heritage elements and heritage architecture
Capture photos of stunning views over Hempstead Bay and follow a trail through the majestic mansions of the Gatsby era.

Sands Point Preserve is a large area of land in the outskirts of New York City with elegant gardens and parks complementing its historic buildings. Home to panoramic views of Port Washington and one of the last remaining Gold Coast mansions, it is the ideal spot for a leisurely stroll away from city life. Walk along scenic nature trails to reach the beach.

Visit the 1923 Falaise, an enormous country house and museum with exhibits about its past owners and position in the bourgeois society. The affluent Guggenheim family passed the mansion to the Friends of Sands Point Preserve group. Make your way to the other mansions that belonged to the 1920’s American Dream. The large structures include Hempstead House, Castle Gould and Mille Fleurs.

Relax at Washington Port and stare into the sparkling blue water. Explore some of the 216 acres (87 hectares) of woods and gardens along the shoreline. Have a picnic while enjoying the serene environment and spacious grounds. Play Frisbee or soccer on the lawn with your family and friends.

The village of Sands Point is referred to in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s modern literary classic The Great Gatsby. The writer relates stories about the old money from aristocratic families in the area. Don’t be surprised to see TV crews using the setting for another period show.

Watch for performing arts programs and join fitness groups and other activities. Take part in weekly yoga and meditation sessions.

Pay a fee per vehicle or per person to enter the grounds. It opens daily year-round from morning until late afternoon.

Sands Point Preserve lies in the village of the same name on Long Island in New York State. From the center of New York City, take the Port Washington train to its last stop, followed by a bus to the preserve. You can also drive the 28-mile (45-kilometer) journey northeast in less than 1 hour.
