Idiosyncratic to be sure. Initially we were a bit non plussed but over time became very comfortable. The negatives are that there are a lot of stairs (unless you stay in a downstairs room of course) and they are steep and narrow. The bedside lights took a bit of puzzling to figure out how to turn on and off. But we got there in the end. Another idiosyncratic thing was the huge bath in the bedroom (as well as a lovely shower). The plus points were many. A wonderfully comfortable bed. A delicious breakfast with extensive choice. Friendly staff. Close to amenities in the town. The car park is at the back. Overall plus and we'd stay there again.

Selected Wheatsheaf based on location travelling from Scotland to South Coast. We're told at reception that the room was up 2 flight of stairs but it would be worth it, Walking into room 12 our breath was taken away, it was definitely worth the climb. Dinner that evening and breakfast next morning we're excellent. Will definitely be back. Jim and Lorna

Gorgeous hotel with a really quaint old world feel. Really genourous room facilities. I would have preferred a bath to a shower but I wasn’t given the option at booking. Staff all really pleasant and helpful.

Customer service and experience was excellent. Anita and Amy made us feel very welcome. Excellent breakfast, table service rather than buffet, always preferable and good fresh coffee. Easy parking. We were pleased with our room and slept well. Would definitely recommend.

We had a wonderful weekend at the Wheatsheaf - everything from arrival to departure was just wonderful. The onsite parking in the middle of a town was very welcome. The staff on arrival were friendly and helpful and the room was clean, comfortable and tastefully furnished (thank you for the room upgrade). There were 15 of us for dinner at quite short notice on the Saturday night but the hotel coped with it very professionally and the food was fantastic. On Sunday, we had a belated 70th birthday lunch with 30 guests aged from 1 to 70. We would like to give a special thank you to Amy for arranging our special day and making sure everything went smoothly. Once again the food was top class and the service could not be faulted. The Wheatsheaf deserves the 5 star rating we have given it for the high standard of customer service, the very polite and helpful staff, the very comfortable and clean rooms and the fantastic food whether breakfast, lunch or dinner. We will be staying again of course. Peter and Sue (4-7 September 2026)
