A high wind drove Wesley into Gwennap Pit for the first time on the Sunday evening of September 5 1762. That afternoon he had spoken in the open air at Redruth but "the wind was so high at five that I could not stand in the usual place at Gwennap. But at a small distance was a hollow capable of containing many 1,000 people. Methodist open air meeting place. 1762, remodelled in 1806. Conical pit made in fallen-in mine shaft which was used by John Wesley for preaching in 1762, and remodelled and reduced in size in 1806, to 360 feet circumference and 16 feet depth, with 13 circles of tufted seating faced with random rubble. On the west side a flight of segmental steps is built into the terraces, and to the north round the 4th step down is a pair of stone posts with a rectangular boulder between them (probably the "pulpit"). Used for Whit Monday services annually from 1807 to 1966.

Line of old tramway near Scorrier Although it looks like a sunken pathway lying beside the B3298, this is the former trackbed of the Portreath Tramway, which now forms a section of the mineral tramways trail that links up with the line of the old Redruth and Chasewater Railway.

The apartment was very clean and well appointed. Very warm and comfortable. Beds and bed linen were wonderful with spectacular pillows.
