Discover wild rivers and magnificent rain forest in this unspoiled district of Nicaragua, known for its natural beauty and fantastic ecotourism destinations.

Journey to wondrous biological reserves, explore unique wetlands and spot exciting wildlife in Río San Juan. Named after the rushing river that runs through it, this region features historical riverside towns and is inhabited by all kinds of diverse animal, reptile and bird species, from howler monkeys to toucans to iguanas.

Delight in the wonders of the magical Islas Solentiname, a group of 36 small and isolated islands in Lake Nicaragua. Spend your days fishing, swimming and relaxing in a colorful hammock under the shade of a palm tree. Culture lovers will enjoy browsing the exhibits at the Museo Archipiélago Solentiname on Isla San Fernando and visiting the craft workshops at El Refugio on Isla Mancarrón. Cruise around the shores of Isla Zapote, a haven for birds. The islands can be accessed by plane or boat from the mainland.

Back on the mainland lies the relaxed town of El Castillo, where the biggest attraction is the 17th-century Spanish fortress, La Fortaleza de la Limpia Pura e Inmaculada Concepción. This photogenic fortress has withstood multiple pirate attacks and now contains an interesting on-site museum. Visit the El Castillo Tourist Office near the docks to sign up for caiman-spotting night tours and other excursions.

Join guided treks into the designated sections of the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve and spot some of the amazing animals that live in this special rainforest. Ask your guide to tell you about the medicinal plants and foods of the forest and search for sloths, poisonous frogs and macaws. Tourists can also enter the reserve by boat down the San Juan River. Both overnight stays and daytrips can be arranged from the town of San Juan de Nicaragua.

Fly into the district capital of San Carlos to start your adventure in this forested region and take the time to enjoy the spectacular scenery, varied wildlife and welcoming culture.
