Red Canyon Tours

Red Canyon featuring desert views
Set off on a hike through this picturesque canyon in the heart of the Arava Desert and enjoy the beautiful views, wildlife and astounding geology.

The Red Canyon is one of the Arava Desert’s most astounding geological formations. Tucked away in the Eilat Mountains it offers excellent hiking and stunning views. Venture out to this remote, yet accessible spot to encounter the wilds of the desert and some spectacular Middle Eastern vistas.

The canyon is 100 feet (30 meters) in height and 1,000 feet (300 meters) in length. It gets its name from the natural phenomenon which occurs when the bright sun strikes the reddish rocks of the canyon, creating a vibrant red color. Swirls of white, yellow, purple and pink create mesmerizing patterns on the walls of the canyon. Set off on an adventure to hike the canyon and experience the tranquility and natural beauty of the region.

The canyon is part of the Nahal Sani riverbed. It is winding and narrow, and while it takes some physical fitness to navigate the chasms and steep sides, no prior rock climbing experience or special equipment is required. Choose from one of several trails that weave through the canyon. The family-friendly and well-marked green trail is the least challenging, while the black trail takes around 75 minutes and passes through a second creek.

Look for wildlife as you walk through the canyon. You may see horned ibex high on the cliff sides or small rock hyrax scuttling amid the cracks. The skies are seasonally filled with vast flocks of birds who pass through on their great north-south migrations.

Approach the Red Canyon through the Eilat Mountains. Looking back, you will see sweeping views of the Arava Desert across to Jordan, the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s Sinai Desert.

The Red Canyon is located some 20 minutes’ drive north of the southern city of Eilat. There are a number of tour companies offering guided hikes to the Red Canyon and the neighboring Timna Valley. Otherwise, a rental car is the only way to get out there. Temperatures can soar in the summer months so take plenty of water and avoid the hottest times of the day. Entry is free.
