Preah Vihear is a temple built by the great Khmer Empire and dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Situated in the northern most part of Cambodia and perched on a mountain bordering Thailand. Because of its present location there have been numerous skirmishes between the two countries trying to lay claim to it. In 2008 the temple was designated a UNESCO world heritage site for Cambodia.

This temple is unique in Cambodia because of its pyramid shape reminiscent of those in South and Central America. Koh Ker is about 2 hours from the center of Siemreap in the province of Preah Vihear. This once thriving capital of the great Khmer Empire now sits in a remote jungle. This is the mainly temple with smallest ones spread out in the area. #ancient #ruins #temple #angkor #khmer
