Portage Glacier Tours

Ice berg visible didn’t even see it the day before. Huge
Ice arches, waterfalls carving their way down layers of snow pack, remote enough that all you can hear is the excitement of those you ventured here with. It feels like another world, an icy blue planet ripe for exploring.

Portage Glacier is part of the beautiful Chugach National Park. Get there by traveling down the Seward Highway in Anchorage about 50 miles towards Seward. The drive itself is breathtaking, but the trip into Portage, AK is a whole other animal. Thousands of glaciers top the (very tall) mountains and the bluest water you have ever seen can be seen trickling down the sides of these mountains, forming awe-inspiring lakes and rivers. $34 (or less- coupons are online) will get you a 1 hour tour in the Ptarmigan around Portage Lake. You come to about 300 yards away from this monstrous beauty for rare photo ops, all the while listening to a park ranger narrate the history of the area around you. A truly humbling experience for those of us who occassionally need a reminder of how powerful this earth really is.
On your way to Portage Glacier, make sure to leave yourself a little time to stop at some of the hiking trails along Portage Glacier Road. While the glacier itself is beautiful, you won't want to miss these gems of a view. The glacier silt turns the water the most amazing shade of blue- you feel like you are in a painting!

There are plenty of hiking trails around (I can't remember the name of this particular one- Salmon something-or-other?- but this picture was taken right at the start before you even set foot on the trail.

Portage area can be a great place to go including the visitor center. New Year's Eve day, the roads were not well maintained, parking lot was not plowed and the weather was bad - wind and sleet. The photo I am adding is from a great day this past April.
