a pleasant surprise! when we checked in, it felt like we were the only guests in the hotel. we found out that it was an extremely quiet season, as can be seen for other nearby hotels and restaurant. We had the whole onsen to ourselves! Since it is in a little town, don't expect many F&B outlets nearby. The host (which happened to be the owner) treated us very well, a big Thank You!!
We stay at the Alpine Route Hotel for 1 night before we embarked on the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine trip. The hotel is a bit old but well kept. Family run, the service was good and friendly. The room was big, traditional Japanese and comfortable. Breakfast was awesome !
The hotel was older and a little worn but the experience and the people we met made up for it. The hotel owners were very gracious and went out of their way to help us with train routes and times. The town closes up early and the hotel is traditional Japanese in the bedding and the food service. It was a great experience and we loved the people here and the area was so beautiful.
onsen is in excellent condition. separate baths for women and men. each bath had three rooms. an entry, prep area, and the bathing/soaking room, which is very warm, like a sauna. onsen is immaculate. quite large. mens bathing area accomodates about 15 or so individual bathing stools. womens probably the same. onsen is in separate building behind hotel. access through nicely decorated short hallway. breakfast was great. traditional japanese. multicourse. delicious. our room was in good condition. new tatami mats. new room dividers. closet had several extra futons. so i used three for me alone. very comfortable sleeping. hotel is in a quiet area away from the road. staff is friendly and helpful. they arranged baggage delivery to our hotel in toyoma, and sure nuf, it was there when we arrived after alpine route. walls need new wallpaper, but i can't complain given that other ryokans in the area charge two to three times as much.
very quiet precinct: most of the shops were closed when we went out for dinner at 7:30pm. Only a few noodle restaurants open near the bus stop. Better to get your snacks or cup noodles somewhere else as the only convenient store closes early and no vending machine near-by.
Hotel breakfast starts at 7am, so we changed to have our cup noodles as breakfast in order to catch the early bus at 7:23am.
It's a nice place to stay a little ways away from the main hub of ski resorts so you're gonna pay a little less for the room here. It only took me 25 minutes to drive up to the Hakuba area from the hotel and the conditions where nice.
The hotel is a little old as some other reviewer commented but the room was cozy and very clean. The only complaint I have is the windows to our Japanese style room had no sun protection so in the morning a ton of light came through at about 6:30 am waking us up every time. The futon was surprisingly comfy and warm though.
The onsen was really nice and we pretty much had it to ourselves as there were not many guests in the hotel when we were there. The water was really nice after a long day of snowboarding. Overall a good place to stay if you want to save a few dollars on lodging costs when skiing or snowboarding in the Hakuba area.
The staff was very friendly and the room was huge. Nice traditional Japanese rooms and a good spa as well. They even let us store our bags there over night while hiking in the mountains!
Value for money but no staff can speak English. Tried to sent several emails to the property but never replied. The hotline from Expedia didn't help at all, finally we checked in with no issues though.
