Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art Tours

Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art
Some of the city’s and region’s most influential artists, going far back into history, provide a sense of Okayama through artists’ eyes.

Given the natural beauty surrounding Okayama, it perhaps isn’t surprising that the Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art possesses an impressive collection of art by local artists. Dedicated to displaying art that has “a connection to Okayama Prefecture,” the museum gives a glimpse into the sensibility of Okayama’s artists. Look at traditional-style brush paintings or admire the more modern art being produced in the region, looking forward to the future.

Pause outside the building, designed by the locally famous Shinichi Okada architects, to appreciate its modernity, which nonetheless harkens back to more traditional forms. Pass through to the exhibition room, where a selection of the collection rotates through every couple of months. Watch for special exhibits, which sometimes take over the whole space.

Start with the more traditional brush and ink paintings, such as a beautiful painting of the Yujan landscape by Lu Shan. Admire the likeness captured in Muxi’s portrait of Laozi, the famous Chinese philosopher, which was recently designated an important cultural asset.

Look for the famous master Sesshū and his distinctive style. Continue on to the more modern works, including a cubist sculpture by Kazuo Sakata.

Appreciate the enigmatic expression of Okakura Tenshin’s Man Fishing at Izura. This traditional sculpture evokes the craftsmanship demonstrated in the nearby display of local pottery, which speaks to the long heritage of art in the area.

Check the calendar for events and lectures, when local professors and experts explain the collection, perfect for learning more and practicing Japanese.

Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art is not far from other tourist attractions in downtown Okayama. Walk to the museum in 10 minutes from Okayama Castle or just a few minutes more from the Korakuen Garden. Okayama Station is a 15-minute walk or 8-minute tram ride away.

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday during regular business hours. On the fourth Friday of the month, “Art Evenings” keep the museum open late. The café has the same hours as the museum. Pay the admission fee and ask for discounts for seniors and students. Children have free admission.
