The capital of Mykonos Island is the picturesque town of Chora, commonly known as Mykonos Town. Explore tiny winding streets that take you past whitewashed buildings, through quaint neighborhoods and down to the sprawling harbor precinct. The town is home to many of the island’s hotels and hostels, and many visitors to the island base themselves here.
Visitors staying in the town have access to plentiful shopping, local produce and Greek restaurants. The town grew during the tourism boom of the 1970s, becoming one of the most cosmopolitan destinations in the Greek islands. Today it’s home to art galleries, fashion boutiques and cafés, as well as the traditional architecture and local cuisine that give it its Greek charm. You’ll also find tour companies and transport that allow you to visit other parts of Mykonos, and the islands in the vicinity.
Spend a few hours eating, drinking and people-watching in the harbor district. The area is the town’s main entertainment precinct, and traditional Greek tavernas line the streets. Try local seafood dishes, served on grand platters, and finish the meal with a glass of ouzo, the anise-flavored liqueur that is the national aperitif of Greece. The harbor is a hub of activity with boats frequently coming and going. Watch as fishermen unload their haul, or meet travelers who have just arrived.
Learn about the history of the Greek islands at one of the town’s many cultural institutions. The Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum and the Maritime Museum are all located within the town center, and offer fascinating insight into the culture of the Greek people.
Mykonos Town is located on the west coast of the island, and is well serviced by boats and public transport. If you are traveling by car, parking is easiest in the harbor precinct.
