Palm trees, snowcapped mountains and the majestic Lake Geneva all come together in this charming city, often identified as the jewel of the Swiss Riviera.

Montreux has been a favorite vacation spot among celebrities for years. Thanks to its remarkably mild climate, much of the canton of Vaud is known as the Swiss Riviera. Visit this welcoming city on the eastern end of Lake Geneva.

Palm trees, cypresses and other Mediterranean plants flourish here. Enjoy the weather and stunning surroundings as you stroll along the Lakeside Promenade. Continue south to Château de ChillonOpens in a new window, the iconic fortress that lords over Lake Geneva from its shoreline island. The promenade also continues north to the equally charming city of VeveyOpens in a new window.

On your walk, look for the signature yellow awnings of the Montreux Palace. Now a luxury hotel, it is a splendid example of Belle Époque architecture.

Although neither is open to the public, Crêtes Castle and Châtelard Castle are both iconic Montreux sights. Châtelard Castle has watched over the city since the 14th century. Crêtes Castle, built high on a terrace, is an example of the 18th-century opulence that prevailed in the region.

Throughout the year, Montreux hosts many events and festivals. In the summer, the Montreux Jazz Festival attracts top international talent. The holidays are extra festive in Montreux centered around its classic Christmas Market.

Famous people, ranging from socialite Zelda Fitzgerald to author Vladimir Nabokov, have lived in Montreux. However, its most beloved resident was Queen singer Freddie Mercury. Pay homage to the star at the Freddie Mercury Statue, where he appears to be performing an eternal concert to Lake Geneva.

From Montreux, easily explore other sights along the Swiss Riviera. Spend a day tasting wine at the famous vineyards of Lavaux. Take a train to the snowcapped summit of Rochers de Naye to see across Lake Geneva all the way to the Jura Mountains. Explore Lake Geneva with a boat cruise to see other cities and sights around the lake. Most of the shoreline along the promenade is open for swimmers and sunbathers.
