Mexico
From pre-Hispanic ruins to resort-lined beaches, thronged metropolises to cactus-dotted deserts, few countries can offer as much diversity as Mexico. Visit the vast landscapes of Mexico, a country in the southern half of North America that promises picture-perfect beaches, ancient ruins and delicious chili-laden cuisine from street-side vendors. Hike up a volcano, see pyramids from centuries past and visit grand colonial palaces in the capital city.
Mexico’s rich history can be traced by to ancient civilizations such as the Aztecs, Olmecs and Mayans. The Spanish conquests in the 1500s forever altered the course of Mexican history, but it did not erase many of the customs and architecture that still stands from the country’s pre-colonial days.
Start in Mexico City to see the Palacio Nacional, a colonial palace with murals depicting the history of Mexico. Head north of Mexico City to see Teotihuacán, a vast archaeological complex featuring the remnants of a settlement dating back to between the 1st and 7th century. While much of the city is now ruins, the two main pyramids, Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon, still tower over the landscape.
Mexico is blessed with incredible beaches and coastal resorts. Experience the active nightlife of Puerto Vallarta, splash around in the sparkling blue waters of Playa del Carmen and explore the family-friendly beaches of Cabo San Lucas.
The most comfortable and often cheapest way of traveling between cities is by bus. Tickets are pre-booked, so get them ahead of time online or at a dedicated kiosk. Alternatively, rent a car to travel around. To bring in your own car, you’ll need to obtain a Temporary Import Permit before you go. For a unique way to see the north of Mexico, take the full-day El Chepe train and look out the window at the rolling fields, fertile farmland and dramatic canyons.
December through April offer the driest conditions. If it’s heat you’re after, consider a May or June trip as this is when temperatures typically peak.
For a thoroughly relaxing trip to Mexico, stay in one of the many luxury spa resorts on the coast. Unwind by swimming in saltwater pools and swinging in a hammock.
