Rented a room for a friend, who was recently left homeless and needed a place to stay. He requested a late checkout (Noon), which they agreed to. In the morning, however, they started ringing his phone at 10:30 while he was in the bathroom dealing with a stomach ailment, and they would not stop calling. They then started shouting through the door at 11 am that he had to get out, or they would call the police for not exiting in a timely manner. I called them on his behalf to try and explain the situation (asking them to honor the late checkout) and they just yelled at me over the phone, as well, never actually listening. They kept saying "not scamming me" or something, and then said "if he's not out in 5 minutes, we call the police."
While the language barrier may have played into this situation (and I can certainly empathize with them; being immigrants running a business in a low-rent district, they probably have had people 'scam' them or at least be very disagreeable), but their own lack of empathy was evident. They refused to return the deposit, too, over the 5 minute delay, despite having agreed to a late checkout before.
There are better places in Long Beach for cheap (including the Ruby Motel just down the street, which we put our friend up in while we've been trying to find him a more permanent housing situation), so I would not recommend.
