The Pumphouse is in the middle of no-where. There is a lot of excellant hiking and some boating around. The hotel is designed to support this. It is less well designed to suit the long term traveler because of lack of space for suitcases or hanging cloths. That said the staff was extremely helpful. The food very good, and ambiance superb!

Paradise at the Pumphouse

This is a class act. Set in pristine Tasmania at Lake st Clair. The building is classified and is old but they have managed to make it a stunning, retro and extremely comfortable. We stayed in room 18,the Panarama Room, watching the wild of Tassie change every second. Dinner was shared tables which is the new way of dining, an excellent way to meet people. Great Tassie wines to purchase and of course the sourdough bread freshly baked delivered to your room during the day. The staff were excellent in every way. We dined one night away from the Pumphouse at the Derwent Bridge hotel which was a must do. We are in World Heritage Area and "Mother Nature" is at her best. The Pumphouse is full of history and is an experience not to be missed. Thanks.

Fabulous but...

The hotel, the setting, the staff and the ambience were all fabulous. But the evening meal was without doubt the most bland food we have ever had. Good ingredients, locally sourced but zero taste. Fortunately we had excellent company for the communal dining however, all of us agreed the food was flavorless. We would recommend in room dining from the well stocked larder. Sadly we weren’t asked for our feedback when we checked out as we would prefer to have given negative feedback directly. So another slight blot on the otherwise fabulous stay.

Disappointing

We were looking forward to the experience in a beautiful part of Tassie with friends for a special birthday long weekend. Greeted by a lovely staff member, Judy who was lovely, helpful and then the customer service was pretty lax after that time - until departure when same girl looked after us. Once all the do's and dont's had been explained, upon checking our rooms and unpacking - we identified no working fan in bathroom, not enough lighting, spiderwebs across the window, fly screen in bedroom area covered with spiderwebs, bird poo down window in living area, TV didn't work and upon checking connections, antenna cable stuck with blu tack! No ironing facilities. No still water nor selection of soft drinks nor juices in bar fridges. Food for the dinners was bland and not the standard I would expect from such an award winning establishment. We had also ordered a birthday cake, expecting it would come from a patisserie or similar when ordered in from Hobart, only to find it was from Cheesecake Shop. We were totally disappointed with the experience, especially considering the prices charged.

Magestic location, well above expectations

We visited Pumphouse Point as part of our honeymoon and had high expectations. It easily exceeded these. The location and setting was stunning and majestic, views hard to beat, option of hiking limitless and wildlife a special treat. Larder included delicious options and the shared dinners were affordable and generous. We met some lovely like minded people, some who we will remain in contact with.

Luxurious

Me and my wife spent 1 night in a top floor room and we loved it. If you can afford it, 2 nights is ideal to take advantage of the area and the facilities. Clearly, a lot of thought has gone into creating this accommodation - it is luxurious, cleverly designed and decorated, and relaxing. It's a remote area, but there are books and games available, easy walks nearby, and plenty of places to sit and enjoy the view. It's a bit disappointing not to have wifi, and we didn't have phone service either (reception is usually good but there were problems with the Optus network, not Pumphouse's fault) but it is the sort of place where the experience is enhanced by the lack of distractions. The room has a lovely view of the lake, the kitchen is cleverly hidden and very well equipped, the bathroom has under-tile heating and the bed is amazingly comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and we appreciated the buggy rides to/from the pumphouse in the cold wind and rain. The breakfast was really nice, but we thought the dinner, while good, didn't justify $50pp - although if you like dinner parties (unlike us) then the jovial atmosphere might make it worth it.

Unique and spectacular accommodation experience

Pumphouse Point on Lake St Clair is 2 1/2 hrs drive from Hobart - remote but spectacular, set 200 metres out on a jetty in a beautifully restored Pump house. Be prepared for about 5 kms of unsealed road access to the resort. Rooms with a King bed and ensuite and generous mini bar, honour fridge/pantry which, like the common room on each of three levels look out over the breathtaking Lake St Clair to the mountains. This is a must for all serious visitors to Tasmania. Guests are met on arrival by the hosts with champagne and a briefing then a golf cart ride to the Pumphouse accommodation along the jetty. A hearty dinner is served (given the remoteness, this is a must, as is breakfast with its accommodation for most tastes. Some great national forest walks in the area and photography to boast about for a lifetime. We stayed one night (it wasn't cheap but was not outrageous) - we should have stayed two nights so as to soak up the full range of experiences available. We would happily recommend and go again ourselves

Stunning location

The tone was set with the very friendly, personalised greeting...complete with a glass of bubbly. The room larder was stocked very well and the crusty bread brought to your room was a fabulous touch. Great place to take in the view, quiet and restful outlook. Go for a waterview room if staying the Shorehouse.

Eco Retreat

We stayed in one of the 6 rooms in the Shore House, former administration offices of the Tasmanian Hydro Commission . The old Pump house accommodation offers 12 rooms and are accessed by a long causeway from the lake edge. Our room had a large floor to ceiling window offering a magnificent view across the lake towards the mountains. A self-serve breakfast offers hot and cold foods in the communal dining room. Each room is provided with a well-equipped "pantry" full of delicious local products, ham, cheese, salmon etc, enough to provide a heart lunch. The evening meal, which is extra, is served again in the dining room en famille which is good to meet your fellow guests. Electric buggies ferry guests and luggage from the car park to accommodation, and between the 2 accommodation buildings. There is a variety of bush walks sloe by with a good chance of spotting wildlife, including platypuses. Be prepared for sudden changes in the weather and pack prepared for everything, especially the cold.

Special night away

Great place for a special night away. Great welcome. We fitted in some lovely short walks. We had a lovely breakfast. We didn't have dinner there but brought our own nibblies which we had with a lovely complimentary fresh loaf of bread. Great that they helped with our luggage to our room on the point.

Don't hesitate. Just book it!

As everyone else will say this place is amazing. One of a kind experience and we will certainly make our way back at some point! The only thing to watch out for is the king beds are actually two beds pushed together so you might be better choosing a queen need room.

A True Tassie Experience you Will Never Forget!

The staff were extremely friendly and courteous, our room (Waterview with bath) in the Shorehouse was expertly appointed. The view of the Pumphouse from our room was ridiculously picturesque. There is NO in-room WiFi but you should receive decent mobile signal with your phone (at least with Telstra and Optus) but to be honest you don't really need the internet when you're there. The shared-table dining experience was something you have to try, we met quite a few interesting people and the discussion just flows around the table. You ended up talking something completely random at the end of the night, it's highly entertaining. The self-serving continental breakfast consists of a good selection of pastries, bread, cheese and drinks to get your day started, and you can even boil egg to your own personal preference. You can also request freshly-baked crusty bread to be delivered to your room at any time, they don't lie when they say you can smell the bread before it arrives. There are several natural walks available near the Pumphouse Point, we did the Platypus Bay Walk and combined that with the Aboriginal Cultural Walk, it's about 2 hrs and the scenery was impressive. All in all, we love everything about Pumphouse Point, it exceed all our expectations and we could only wish that we were there a bit longer. The only compliant was that we didn't manage to see the snow during our stay but that's a good excuse for us to come back to Pumphouse Point again. :-)

The perfect place in winter, with plenty to do and experience or just relax in front of the fire. Dining with other guests was great, as was the breakfast allowing you to create a pack lunch. BUT don't miss the WALL - it is breathtaking
