You should not stay here for more than 1 day.

You should not stay here for more than 1 day. The first day was fine. But it was really bad on the 2nd day. This is a ryokan, but they kept the bedding in my room on the second day They should have resumed it back to living room and made the bed for me at my dinner time. The worst is the dinner on Day 2. Most of the food were already on the table before I arrived, including those sushi (temaki) which the shape was distorted and the seaweed was soft, the raman was soft and cold, the deep fried chicken and shrimp were cold. What's even worse, the waitress immediately turned on the flame to cook the steak where I arrived, I had to eat the steak first, instead of following the steps. I really couldn't enjoy my dinner.

It was a fine stay with a very well crafted meal plan. Everything was beautiful. I did not use either of the bathing facilities (public or private). I think my only issue is that from my room (412) there was a light shining in from across the way and very traditional Japanese window blocker didn’t quite do enough to block the light out, but that didn’t make the experience a negative one.

Excellent service! Welcome tea provided with small snack. We used luggage forwarding and they brought our luggage to our room (without any prompting). Very courteous service. Several onsens including an onsen that allows tattoos. (You can also pay for a private onsen). Please try the food! You will be so full and satisfied. Please note that you do NOT wear shoes in the dining area.

Very clean, Staff are very nice and helpful. Close to Kyoto station which is convenient (6min walk). If you are tired but still want to explore, its close to shopping/dining areas like Yodobashi Camera, Restaurants, coffee shops anf Kyoto tower. The japanese inn experience was good.

Super clean room with excellent location. It was not on the main busy street, so our stay was nice and quiet. Friendly staff and wonderful dinner and breakfast, I'd totally come back.

The property is within easy walking distance to Kyoto Station for quick access to JR Railway, Shinkansen, and local Kyoto transit, offering travel options to many of Kyoto’s historical sites including Nara, an easy day trip. Staff was great for easy check in and check out. Public bath inside the hotel was a big plus after full day of visiting Kyoto’s historical sites.

The location, just one block from Kyoto Central Station, is exceptionally convenient. The hotel is immaculately clean. While the staff’s English knowledge is somewhat limited, their warmth, attentiveness, and willingness to assist more than compensate, resulting in truly outstanding service. The highlights of our stay were the traditional Japanese breakfast and the experience of sleeping on tatami, both of which added a memorable touch to our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our stay at this exceptional Ryokan.

Das Hotel ist schön zentral zur Kyoto Station aber auch fußläufig erreicht man wirklich einiges. Wir waren sehr begeistert vom Aufenthalt und empfehlen es definitiv weiter. Wir haben unsere Koffer vom vorherigen Hotel dorthin senden lassen, was auch super funktioniert hat. Die Koffer standen bei Ankuft bereits auf dem Zimmer. Im Vergleich zu den meisten Hotels in Japan sind die Standard Zimmer auch deutlich größer und im klassischen Ryokan Style mit Tisch/ Sitze und Bett auf dem Boden. Alles war traditionell und doch sehr modern gehalten, qualitativ hochwertig und absolut perfekt sauber. Für jeden lag außerdem ein leichter Yukata fürs Frühstück etc. bereit. Auch vom Frühstück waren wir sehr begeistert. Kein Buffet aber absolut lecker und traditionell. Wirklich ein Erlebnis wert! Das Personal unfassbar zuvorkommend und freundlich. Die Badehäuser stehen ebenfalls täglich zur Verfügung. Sogar für tattoowierte Menschen. Absolute Empfehlung zur Entspannung: den Privaten Onsen im Hotel für 45 Minuten buchen. Würde es mehr Sterne geben, hätte das Hotel auch noch mehr verdient. Sollten wir nochmal nach Kyoto reisen, werden wir definitiv wieder in diesem Hotel bleiben.

As a bigger, middle aged American, my opinion of the Ryokan Ginkaku Kyoto is probably skewed. It was a nice enough place, with a great location right next to Kyoto Station, but little things we take for granted in the US did not go smoothly. We arrived at 3:30pm, and check-in was not until 4:00. They said we couldn’t go up to the room until 4:00, so we tried to ask to have them store our luggage. That didn’t seem to be an option (likely due to the language barrier). They just offered for us to have tea while we waited. After a long day of travel, all I wanted was to drop the bags off and continue our sightseeing. I didn’t want to just sit for 30 minutes for tea, as we were only in town for 2 nights with lots to see and do. The next day my son had the room key in his pocket and it cracked in half when he bent over to pick something up. We went to the desk to get a replacement and there was a 1500Y charge. Something I take for granted in the States I guess - I’ve never been charged for a lost or broken key card. Then they only keep towels at the Hot Bath in the mornings, so when we went down at night, we should have brought our towels from the room, but realized way too late, so we dried off with our clothes. Again, not their fault per se, but a little gripe when we are standing there wet without a towel in sight. Then, the beds - I knew they would be futon pads on the floor, but didn’t realize how much it would hurt my hips and back sleeping on the ground. Ouch.

Fantastic stay at this Ryokan. Public bathhouse, only to hotel guests and both times I went I was alone, so it felt very private. Option to also have a private onset session. The Japanese dinner was amazing and possibility to accommodate to a certain point if you are not a fish eater. They change your bedroom to the futon around 6.30pm and offer tea service in the afternoon and coffee in the morning in the lobby. Location is very good with only 5-10 minutes walk from the train station. Highly recommend to have the experience of traditional Japanese living.
