Work in progress

A grand pile in it's day, undergoing a gradual and much needed, refurbishment. The location is it's biggest pull, set quite high above town, with simply stunning views from frontal elevations.The welcome and general ambience proved pleasant and the public areas comfortable, tasteful and pleasing. Our (rear) bedroom was a relatively easy climb up the wide staircase to the first floor. It proved just adequate. Furnishings were functional, but a tad utility and tired, as were fixtures / fittings etc. Bathroom was adequate, with plenty of very hot water on tap! Dining was pretty average, also reflecting the need for an overhaul. Quite handy for the picturesque Toberory Main Street and it's varied attractions. Did I mention the views? If refurbishment is eventually completed, the Western Isles could be a winner!

We were let down

Despite having had several emails from Expedia confirming our booking, when we arrived we were advised that the hotel had had no notice of our arrival. The receptionist told us that the hotel was no longer in communication with Expedia, and made no effort to find us alternative accommodation. We had to ask her to ring round on our behalf - we eventually booked into The Mishnish which gave us a much better deal. For this reason I cannot fairly rate the room. However, when I rang Expedia for advice on how to deal with the matter, the extremely helpful and pleasant customer advisor told me that the hotel had not in fact severed links with Expedia. I should have contacted the hotel myself to confirm the booking - something that I was advised to do by Expedia, but forgot...

Staying at this hotel is like a step back in time. A person must be able to navigate stairs and parking is limited but the views from the terrace were great and their haggis at breakfast was excelent. Great staff.

Beautiful old hotel on a cliff with great view

This is a beautiful old stone hotel on a cliff with a wonderful view overlooking the picturesque harbor of Tobermory. We were early in the season, but it booked up quite quickly. Our room was large and comfortable with charming but very functional old furniture and plumbing; the couple we were traveling with had a smaller but still nice one. The breakfasts were GREAT, including especially the porridge, the full Scottish breakfast, and the kippers. We also had a good meal one night after a long day of driving on the island. Public rooms include a nice bar and conservatory with a lovely view overlooking the harbor and a cozy "writing room." I loved the fact that a quiet and friendly dog (owned by the desk clerk?) allowed us to pet it the first day. The day we arrived they were training new staff, so we waited a long time for our rooms, but the owner politely apologized and paid for our drinks. I'd definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone who likes to slow down a bit and enjoy the world.

lovely old building overlooking Tobermory bay

this is a lovely positioned hotel with superb views over the bay within a steep but short walk of town centre. The owner told us how he had needed to spend huge monies on the roof and externals to make it watertight. Im sure this is so but the rooms were extremely sad and tired and the bathroom in a very poor state of repair. The bed was comfy however the general housekeeping was poor. the bathroom wasn't spotless and the carpets needed hoovering. The bed was clean though. breakfast was really good. The hotel has obviously used some money to improve on this aspect and the staff were very polite and helpful. Parking was also limited for a hotel of this size

Great service

Stayed for a wedding. Front of house when put of their way to make sure we could get changed in comfort even when arriving at noon for a check in. Great service

Clean room, good food.

It was lovely. Brilliant room with a sea view. Huge bay window with chairs in to sit and watch the boats bobbing about.

Friendly attentive staff

We were there for four nights, tried the restaurant on the first night and chose to eat there every night it was so good. The staff were very friendly and looked after us well

Room with a view and a half.

Amazing place in the process of major refurbishment. So you have to allow for this they hope to be sorted asap. The room was huge the bed was awsum the views were out of this world.

Enjoyable Stay

Warmly welcomed. Hotel has character. If you want travel lodge style, go stay in a travel lodge. Hotel serves great food in the evenings.

A room for nostalgia

Our room (the Glenturret) was clean and spacious. Just don't expect modern luxury in this historical building but the view was more than enough to make up for it.

Didn't have our reservation!

When we checked in, the hotel told us they didn't have our reservation. We showed them the Expedia web page and they pointed out that even though it said that the reservation was confirmed, it didn't have a confirmation number. It seems Expedia dropped the ball. The hotel was sold out but someway, they got a room for us. Thanks!

2 star hotel with a 5 star view

Old hotel that has changed ownership so many times over the years, there hasn't been consistent upkeep. The guy at reception had zero personality. the front doors to the hotel Don't shut on their own, they stick open from the carpet, allowing the cold wind come through. Roof leaks in many places, in our room as well as the view restaurant. Mold in the bathroom. Paint peeling.

Eleva in a beautiful spotted

Just one night. Our room looked out on the land side (all that as available) but views from bar/restaurant/breakfast were stunning. No lifts so third floor was a bit of a hike. This followed walking back up the hill from the town waterfront so god exercise! Good breakfast.

Wonderful view over the harbour

We knew from previous reviews that this hotel was in need of updating so this managed our expectation. The stately nature and proud location of this hotel are wonderful and the Isle of Mull is absolutely delightful.

We booked double with single beds given twin single/offered our daughter another room mattress disgusting!!then offered another on 3rd level very musty,unacceptable too many stairs to access had to find accommodation elsewhere in poring rain not good would like compensation please!!

huge potential

typical condition for a large old hotel. has plenty character with a lovely dinning area. greats views but some of the rooms need a tidy up. our room was clean and satisfactory.waiter service is friendly and good however the reception staff could do with some character. Not friendly at all.

Anniversary trip to Scotland

A wonderful place to spend our anniversary in Tobermory. The service was excellent, atmosphere of old world charm, and the dinner we had in the restaurant was amazing!

What a shame.

In its hey day this was probably a fabulous hotel, however it is now very dated and tired.An imposing building in a great location. The view over Tobermory bay from the patio is amazing but the conservatory looks like its about to fall into the harbour. Check in was perfunctory verging on rude. The rooms were spacious and clean but threadbare. The evening meal was of a good standard. Breakfast was plentiful but the chef seemed unable to produce a soft poached egg despite three attempts. Such a shame but it needs a huge amount of money spending on it to bring it back to its former glory and make it worth the price tag.

Room with a view!

The hotel was a bit dated and the rooms need a bit of upgrading but all these little things were forgiven when we saw the view from our upper floor window! Wow!! It was worth climbing to the third floor to see the harbour below. Breakfast was good and the staff friendly and helpful.
