Wasn't sure what to expect after looking at the numerous tours and options that go to HB. Decided to use Expedia to book, which got us a great rate for this tour. After booking, the tour operator followed up via email to offer transportation (it's a 5 hr bus ride to get to HB from Hanoi) which we booked. They picked us up at our old quarter hotel exactly on time (8am). We had booked a deluxe cabin, which was quite nice with a large bed (queen), a very nice bathroom (compared to other boats and hotels in Asia) and big windows. The closet is somewhat small, but fine for our mid-size travel backpacks. Bed was somewhat hard, but not really an issue. WiFi was very slow and only in public areas which was a pain. Further, WiFi only works when the boat is moving, thus you cannot use during the evening or night (boat is anchored).
Never was clear whether you can BYOB on the boat. They didn't seem to care and saw no rule posted against it although saw this mentioned from other tours/boats. I would recommend to BYOB if possible, as drinks on the boat are relatively expensive. Plenty of food at meals, and while more heavy on veggies, it was generally decent.
Our guide (Peter) was excellent, knowledgeable, funny, and accommodating. 2 days and 1 night was enough for us, but 2 nights would have allowed more time to see more remote areas (get over the long bus ride). It was misty and somewhat cold during our visit (January), so islands not a stunning as might otherwise be.
