Hotel was fine and staff were friendly but the rooms were incredibly hot with no way to turn the heating down. Had to sleep with balcony door open.

Looks like there have not been any updatesfor decades. Rooms are a good size, plenty of storage with balcony and walking distance to town. Furniture is dated, carpets dirty and baths in need of updating. If you have a car, you’ll pay 10Euro/day and good luck finding a parking spot. We were there 10 days and the only time our bedding was changed was the day I stripped the duvet and pillow cases. My husband did not strip his and you guessed it, his 8 day old bedding was left on. Dirty coffee cups were not exchanged until we called down for fresh ones. We had to ask for additional packs of coffee almost daily. Internet is so slow, we were unable to message pictures. This hotel used to be a first choice but it has gone downhill. The bar staff is very friendly and accommodating. Drinks are good. The Maritim in Köln is still beautiful and a 4 star hotel. The Maritim in Gelsenkirchen is a 2+.

Dear hotel guest, thanks for the rating. Unfortunately, several things have made you feel bad. We are very sorry. Of course we know that the hotel is no longer of the latest standard. For this reason, we have already renovated some hotel rooms and equipped them with new furniture. 4 floors are already finished. We will discuss changing bed linen and cups with the responsible department manager. We would like to apologize to you for this. This is definitely not in the interest of the hotel group. With around 130 parking spaces at the hotel, we actually have a large capacity. A fully booked hotel and the residents can sometimes lead to bottlenecks. Veltins Arena.
Travelled to Gelsenkirchen for 2 concerts at the Veltins arena , the hotel was clean and comfortable. The staff were helpful when needed. Approximately 5-10 min walk into town where you will find restaurants and shops. Can get up to the Veltins arena in about 25 minutes from the hotel. If I ever travel back to Gelsenkirchen I would definitely consider staying here again.

Nice but needs work - would stay again
Overall, it’s a very nice, albeit, dated hotel. They are renovating though. Carpet is worn and some lights have issues, but great shower and friendly staff. Would have stayed again, but booked for second trip.

A great stay!
After reading a few reviews about the "less than 4 star conditions" we were very happily surprised to find a lovely hotel. Everything about the hotel was definitely 4 star- more so than our first night of the holiday in a UK 4 star!! The Maritim lobby, rooms, service, staff -everything was great. Even the open-air car park was much nicer than on-line pictures suggested; it was secluded, los of treees and very secure. I injured a foot while walking and the staff were so helpful in making my stay as comfortable as possible. The food was scrumptious too! All-in-all it was really a great, great stay and we would definitely recommend the Maritim Gelsenkirchen. And we didn't need to use our car for the Essen Spiel because transport links were excellent. A good, good stay. Top marks!

Great place to stop over
1 overnight on way to Kiel from Dunkirk. Great hotel and very reasonsble price... and only a few kms back onto the motorway

Great location. Friendly staff, clean and well up-to-date hotel. Easy and close-by access to Gelsen HBF and tram stations. Was in town for a football match. Would come back and stay in Maritim hotel again.

Do Not stay in a basic room in this hotel
Our room was very small. Television very old (not a slim type one). Lights by bed lethal (old brass ones had to be careful didn't cut yourself). Balcony looked liked no-one had been out to it for years and green mould on walls and the doors hadn't been open for decades? We stayed for 7 nights. It would have been nice if they had asked us if we wanted to upgrade. We asked for a room with walk-in shower told not available until the next day. Never advised it was available. Price of breakfast 18 Euros so ate elsewhere. Reason we stayed there and didn't move elsewhere was because of the SWIMMING POOL this was great hardly anyone else used it and we did most days.

Big commercial hotel - fit for purpose
In town for the football. This hotel was fine, I imagine it's full of commercial travellers (or whatever sales reps are called now) selling widgets and circuit breakers to local industrialists during the week. A nice enough spot - and if fact the only place in town to get a pint after midnight.

Lovely garden location. Large, comfortable bed. Plenty of space in the room for two people and luggage without tripping over each other. Room 312 or 313 overlooked the front of hotel. Kept the balcony door open (while on alert for stray pigeons/doves) to cool down the room. Couldn't reduce the heat in the bathroom, though, despite turning heater knob to the "off" position. Plenty of room & bath amenities, but no free WiFi. [Didn't purchase wireless, so no idea as to its efficacy.] Light carpet and upholstered chairs showed some stains of unknown origin. Shortly after our mid-afternoon check-in, a female staff member knocked briefly on the door and opened it without waiting for a reply. Her delivery of champagne was (unfortunately) to the wrong room, but I was taken a bit by surprise and thankful that I'd just finished dressing after showering. Same type of room entry occurred at 8:30 AM by housekeeping - quick knock, and an even quicker opening of the door. We were scheduled to check out that morning, so a housekeeping visit was unwarranted. Again, happy we were dressed and merely packing... Tram #107 from the Hbf stops right in front of the hotel for a less-than-2€ ride. [Tram is found *below* the Hbf, not at all where the buses are located.] Bakery just down the street yielded an inexpensive breakfast. If we find ourselves in the area again, we'll stay there for the hotel's convenience and value, but we'll slide a chair in front of the door to ensure privacy.

Stayed in the Maritim Hotel on business trip visiting a customer in Essen, as there was a event in Essen the usual hotels were all fully booked, but the Maritim did fit the bill perfectly.

This hotel is few minutes away on taxi from Gelsenkirchen train station. Good hotel with clean rooms. Stayed there for business. If you need to go to Essen, then it will cost 18 Euros roughly.

Nice hotel close to city centre and lovely park
Had a great time, lovely staff very friendly and helpfully. Did not have the breakfast as this is quite expensive, however there are many places in town (walking distance) who provide great breakfast.

Next to a quiet and beautiful Park
Somewhat from the center of town with a direct tram. This well suited my work location. Bar could have stayed open later, as i finished at midnight. Comfortable and Quiet. I think WI-FI should be free which it was not at this hotel.

Well priced hotel
Stayed here for 1 night on a business trip. Hotel was much cheaper than the hotel I usually stay at and just around the corner, very convenient for the main train station. The room was a good size and was surprisingly modern. The bathroom was fine, not as modern as the main room but still very acceptable. I would highly recommend this hotel.

It's ok if you are not super-demanding. Itt's best feature is its location. The room is basic and a bit old fashioned (except the toilet/bathroom which is modern and very good). Very good staff and free intern et were further pluses.A funny aspect is the way you reach your room. This is via an elevator that connects it to the ...street. You enter the elevator you press, say. 3rd floor button and the elevator stops at first floor first where the reception is and the receptionist takes a peek inside (through the little lift window) to check that you are a resident.The lift then continues to your floor.Another minus is that the street is a bit noisy and it might disrupt your sleep.

I can't write positively enough about the staff at the Maritim. I lost my passport somewhere between immigrations and the hotel and asked the staff for the Airport Security phone number. They gave me phone numbers, they gave me websites, and then they all dialled the relevant numbers a million times. Within 36 hours, airport security was calling the Maritim to inform me of the whereabouts of my passport. They were hugely helpful and kind. On top of that, the hotel is located on the gorgeous park grounds of the Stadgarten. Lovely place all around.

The hotel is very old and is in major need of a renovation. The hotel is extremely loud. There is a building under construction right next to the hotel so all you hear are jackhammers and drilling all day. In addition, there was drilling all morning in the hotel because of a broken elevator. The business center is comprised of a broken computer so son't expect to be able to print anything or scan it. The front desk staff are not helpful. You need to buy a T-mobile account to get wireless internet.
