In 2013, supplanted by a short tour of Florida, I toured the southeast of America, from Atlanta to Texas, taking in bits of Mississippi, southern Louisiana and a very healthy helping of Alabama. The highest highlight was driving along a back road in Texas whereupon I was directed by a sign that I should turn right. It was my name, Fred, and an arrow. I followed.

Twenty minutes down the road, I was in Fred, Texas. There was a grocer, a post office and then, holy smokes, this elementary school.

It's truly the great thing about roadtrips. Just go. Let the road guide you. Who knows what you'll find that you never knew existed.

Several days later while cutting from Mobile to Bessemer Alabama, staying off the interstates, we passed right through the town of Catherine, Alabama, which just so happened to be the name of my traveling partner.

There are no other cities in America named Fred or Catherine. We found them both, on the same trip, by accident.

"Could not stay because manager stated they did not take the online reservations at all - Cash Only. Fine with us. Property was nasty, and very low class of folks running around this area. Proper was not properly maintained. Do not stay here."

When i arrived, they said they dont do any online rsvp's If i prepaid, i need to get my money back from expedia and pay for the room again. I need a room, so i did.
