A decent place to stay in Chengde

The Yunshan Hotel more than met our needs while we visited historical sites in the area. The room and bathroom were clean, comfortable and met all of our requirements. The hotel showed need for minor refurbishment, but this appears to be underway. The breakfast selection was ample and satisfying. Western visitors should be aware of this hotel's preference for dealing in local currency and be prepared for both an initial deposit and final payment in RMB. The hotel asked us for an initial deposit approximately 150% of our room cost to cover any consumed items that were not provided as part of the basic room charge. The staff that we dealt with were efficient and professional, but they had very limited English. Intended use of a Mastercard was greeted with apparent unfamiliarity and a certain degree of confusion.

Very limited English

They do not speak good English, which led to several issues with settling the bill in our case. Breakfast was pretty poor.
