"Great place and location and staff exceptional"

"First time back at the GZ Marriott in around 7-8 years and honestly it was an objectively terrible stay. It’s listed as a 5 Star Hotel and the price puts it in the same bracket as other leading hotels in the city. On that basis, the rooms are old and dated. The bathroom is yellowing, the bed and sheets feel stale and not fully clean (if you’ve experienced it you know what I mean) and the furniture looks tired. The food, a really important part of the hotel experience for me, was terrible compared to other buffets at similar hotels in Guangzhou and neighbouring cities. The selection is limited and what’s there doesn’t taste great. Service wise, the front desk staff are clearly being incentivised to upsell. When I arrived, Jason, who checked me in and was introduced as the guest services manager, kept pushing me to upgrade my room. The final bill literally had a line item called “upsell”. At the restaurant, they brought the bill for my lunch and stuck it in my face to sign mid-fork. Better training is needed. This was the worst hotel experience I’ve had in China. There are several genuinely nice properties here, and service at other five star hotels is usually good. I will never stay at the GZ Marriott again. I had already booked and paid for another stay here in one week’s time, and after this experience I cancelled it. The GZ Marriott used to be good but it has deteriorated. At least Starbucks is downstairs.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​"

"The location of the hotel was great. Being part of the Marriott brand, I was expecting better services n standards. Called the front desk on few occasions, but the staff didn’t sounded too friendly. I was also upset that my corridor smelled of soured durian husks for almost half of my stay there. Today surprised that durian was allowed in the hotel and the smell was left to linger for so many days. Totally not something I’ve expected from the brand."

"There was a decent amount of hair in the bathtub when we first checked in. Also loose/broken components in the washroom. We also asked if we were able to get our laundry done and informed the front desk staff that we had left our personal laundry bags in our room before we went out to do some sight-seeing, they said okay, without any mention of pricing or fees, which gave the false impression it was included in our stay. Long story short, the bill for laundry ended up being more than our entire stay and there was an actual form that was supposed to be signed by us and filled out before we received the service for it to be a valid transaction. Our friends from China told us this was technically illegal and the charges were on the hotel to cover the costs…. but I needed my laundry back and they wouldn’t budge on covering the service….we would have never gone through with our laundry request if we were shown or told about the costs it would entail. We had to restrict our travel plans due to taking such a huge hit from this :("
