• Air travel can be a great experience if you take the right things. Firstly, you'll need toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a fresh change of clothes and a good novel. Secondly, find a spot in your carry-on bag for your electronic gadgets, chargers, your medications and maybe a blow-up neck pillow as well. Lastly, and most importantly, be sure to take your passport, travel docs and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked baggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated. Pointed or sharp objects, like a Swiss Army knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosols and matches, are also prohibited.

• Your goal here is to feel as comfortable as you can. Choose a pair of flat, closed-toe shoes, dress in loose, breathable clothing and remember to bring a pullover in case it gets cold in the cabin.

• First things first. Your travel documents and passport will need to be shown to airport security personnel. Keep them someplace accessible so you don't hold up the queue.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your jacket, belt, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your headphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them before your turn.
