If you're poorly prepared, traveling can be overwhelming. But there's no need to hit the panic button just yet. Follow these handy tips for a pain-free start to your time in Stanford. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Air travel can be a stress-free experience if you pack the right things. Firstly, you'll want some basic toiletry items, such as lip balm and hand cream, a spare set of clothes and a good novel. Next, leave space in your carry-on bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, your medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow too. Lastly, and most importantly, be sure to bring your passport, travel docs and your credit cards.

• Double-check that you don't have a pocket knife lurking in one of the zippers of your carry-on luggage. Other prohibited items include flammable or explosive products, such as bleach and fuel, and gels and liquids in containers with a volume of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

What to wear on a flight:

• Your main priority is to feel as comfortable as possible. Pick shoes that are easy to pull on and off, dress in loose, natural-fiber clothing and don't forget to bring a pullover in case it gets chilly in the cabin.
• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To lessen your risk on board, drink lots of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and keep your feet and legs moving.

• Be sure to have your boarding pass and ID handy. They're the first items you'll be asked for by security.

• Want to bring along your favorite perfume or cologne? No problem. As long as the volume is no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it's stored in a clear zip-lock bag, you can bring it with you in your carry-on baggage.
• Slip-on shoes are a good footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when going through security. Boots and heavier-style shoes are often subjected to additional screening.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them safely away in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
