• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by long periods of inactivity. To lessen your risk on board, stay hydrated, consider wearing compression tights or socks and move your legs and feet often.

The trick is to be well prepared before you get to the airport security gate. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Slane before you know it. Follow these tips and get your trip off to a terrific start:

• Airlines won't allow any pocket knives or other sharp items in your carry-on luggage. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them in your checked luggage.
