No matter where you're coming from, flying can be a pleasurable experience if you've planned ahead. We've made a list of handy tips and tricks that will get your Chennai vacation started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane ride can be a pleasure if you've got all the right gear. First things first, you'll need basic toiletries, such as toothpaste, a toothbrush and some deodorant, a fresh change of clothes and a good book. Next, find room in your bag for your phone and charger, your important medications and perhaps a comfy neck pillow as well. Lastly, be sure to bring your passport, travel docs and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items differs between airlines, the general rule to follow is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, blades, fireworks and fuel. Sports equipment like ice skates, and items that could injure passengers, such as guns and swords, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Go for comfort over style. Prepare for temperature changes by dressing in layers, and pick flat, enclosed footwear like sneakers.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-haul flights. It's the result of blood clotting due to poor circulation, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks.

• Airport security personnel first need to check that you have a valid passport and boarding pass before anything else. Have them within easy reach, ready for inspection.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Remove anything on you that is likely to beep. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy jackets or coats. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• For just a few minutes, you'll need to unplug from the digital world. Your phone, laptop and any other electronic devices will need to be sent through the scanner.
• Any liquids or gels, such as perfume or hairspray, that you want to take on board must be no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Also, everything must fit inside a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
• It's also likely that you'll be asked to take your shoes off for scanning, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a wise idea.
