• Traveling on a plane can be a great experience if you carry the right things. Firstly, you'll want a few basic toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and hairbrush, a fresh change of clothes and a magazine or two. Secondly, find a spot in your carry-on bag for your laptop, a charger, any medications and maybe a comfy neck pillow as well. Lastly, and most importantly, remember to bring your passport, travel docs and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hair gel in your checked luggage. Any liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated by authorities. Sharp objects, like your precious Swiss Army knife, and products which are explosive or flammable, such as spray paint, flares and fireworks, are also not allowed.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort really should be your prime concern when deciding what to wear on your flight. Consider your choice of footwear carefully too, as swelling of the feet and ankles are quite common. Slightly roomy, flat shoes are always a sensible way to go.
• You've probably heard about DVT (deep vein thrombosis), a blood clotting condition caused by reduced mobility or inactivity. There are plenty of ways to reduce your risk. Don a pair of compression socks or tights, drink plenty of water and get your legs and feet moving. Wander up and down the aisles of the cabin or try out some exercises in your seat.

The answer is --- be prepared. We've compiled some helpful hints for a fuss-free trip through security. Watch out Mestia, here you come:

• Be sure to have your passport and travel documents within easy reach. They're the first items you'll be asked for by airport security.
• Your jacket, belt, keys and other contents of your pockets, like coins, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process faster by removing them before your turn arrives.
• All electronic gadgets, including your laptop and phone, are also required to be scanned.
• Any gels or liquids, such as lip balm or cologne, that you want to take on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Also, everything must fit inside a quart-size (one liter), zip-lock bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several precious minutes. Hiking boots are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Slip-on sneakers are usually not.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, put them in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed on board.
