• A plane ride can be a great experience if you take the right things. Firstly, you'll want a few basic toiletry items, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a spare change of clothes and a good novel. Next, make room in your hand luggage for your laptop, a charger, your important medications and maybe a quality neck pillow too. Lastly, and most importantly, don't forget to bring your passport, travel docs and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked baggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated. Pointed or sharp objects, like your beloved Swiss Army knife, and dangerous products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosols and matches, are also prohibited.

What to wear on a flight:

• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by lengthy periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to walk around the cabin and stretch your legs or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

• Your ID and travel documents will need to be presented to airport security. Keep them someplace accessible so you don't hold up the queue.
