Depending on where you're coming from, your flight to Asia could be no sweat at all or it could go on forever. We've rounded up some tips that will help you start your next big adventure on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane ride can be a comfortable experience if you pack the right things. Firstly, you'll want a few basic toiletries, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a fresh change of clothes and a magazine or two. Secondly, find a spot in your carry-on bag for your phone and charger, medications and maybe a proper neck pillow too. Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Double-check that you don't have a pocket knife hiding in your carry-on luggage. Other restricted items include flammable or explosive substances, such as bleach and fuel, and liquids and gels in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

• First things first. Your passport and boarding pass will need to be inspected by security personnel. Keep them within easy reach so you don't hold up the line.
• Next up is the X-ray machine. Empty your pockets and remove anything that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes items like earphones or headphones, as well as heavy jackets or coats. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• Electronic devices like phones and laptops will also need to go on a tray to be scanned. No need to worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Remember to remove liquids and gels from your carry-on luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each item should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a clever footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when passing through security. Safety boots and heavier-style shoes are usually subjected to extra screening.
• Sharp or pointed objects (like knives and scissors) are prohibited in the cabin. They'll be confiscated at security, so pack them in your checked luggage.
