Admire the architectural beauty of part of Dubrovnik’s medieval fortifications, a 15th-century stronghold that dominates the southwest corner of the old town.

Fort Bokar was a key component of the defensive wall system that protected Dubrovnik for hundreds of years. The 15th-century circular fort took more than 100 years to complete and is a prominent city landmark, protruding from the medieval walls. Fans of the hit TV series Games of Thrones may be familiar with the structure because it has been used a location for the fantasy show.

Fort Bokar is one of the oldest castles of its kind in the world, and in addition to its defensive role served as a prison during the 19th century. Reach the fort by taking one of the historical walking tours of the ancient walls. As you do so, look for good vantage points to photograph the two-story edifice.

From its ramparts, take in views of Lovrijenac Fort which stands on a rock high above sea level. Fort Bokar is also a good location from which to enjoy panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea.

Then take the time to explore the stronghold’s interior, where you will find several cannons and a small collection of precious stones. If you are in the city during July and August when the Dubrovnik Summer Festival takes place, book tickets for theatrical performances in the fort’s rooms and open spaces.

Go to the small beach adjacent to the fort to get a close look at the exterior. See the tunnel under the fortification that has been cut through the rock it sits on. There is a nice view of the grand edifice at night when the walls are bathed in light.

Fort Bokar is located on the southwestern section of Dubrovnik’s ancient walls. There are numerous tour operators in the city that offer English language guided tours of the medieval fortifications.
