This bay is divided into sections where you can rent pedal boats and kayaks, or relax in the hot spring baths of Negombo Thermal Gardens.

Visit the Bay of San Montano to see a stunning beach in a corner of Ischia Island. Considered the landing point of a saint from Africa, the bay is today known for its hot springs and spas. Relax on the soft, golden sand and work on your tan as you make the most of the island’s hot summers.

Arrive at the beach via a meandering path lined with exotic trees and colorful flowers. Reach the cobbled terrace filled with plants that overlook the sandy stretch. Encircling the bay are dramatic mountains crowned by green vegetation. Rent an umbrella and deck chair and read a book in the shade. Walk out into the sea and spot the jagged rocks rising from the water.

Bring snorkeling gear and dive beneath the surface to meet the array of colorful fish in the bay’s waters. You can also rent kayaks and pedal boats to take out on the sea, which is usually calm and flat.

Make your way to the Negombo Thermal Gardens and choose from the 12 baths of varying temperatures. Brace yourself for the huge temperature change between the two channels of the Japanese Labyrinth Bath that is said to improve your circulation. The complex also has its own restaurant.

Note that the public part of the beach is free to enter at all times. The Negombo Thermal Gardens opens mid-April to October from early morning to evening. Purchase a full day, a half day or just an evening entry ticket. Ask about discounts for children.

To get to Ischia Island, travel by ferry or hydrofoil from Beverello or Porta di Massa near Naples. The Bay of San Montano faces the Tyrrhenian Sea in the northwestern corner of Ischia. From the center of Lacco Ameno on Ischia, walk northwest for 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) to reach the beach in about 20 minutes.

While in the area, make sure to see such nearby sights as the Museo Archeologico di Pithecusae, the Punta di Monte Vico and the Madonna di Zaro.
