Pure in its gothic form, this medieval marvel is a rare jewel bathed in moody lighting and immersed in utter tranquility.

With its stunning stained-glass windows and high ceilings, the Basilica de Santa María del Mar is one of Barcelona’s finest examples of Catalan gothic architecture. It dates back to the 14th century and is known for its harmony of style. For a full understanding of the architecture and history, join a guided tour of the church.

Rising above the surrounding Ribera district are the church’s twin bell towers. Marvel at the intricate carvings of biblical figures. Inspect the large rose window in the center of the western façade.

Pass through the large central portal to find yourself in a nave with an extraordinarily high ceiling. This creates a serene and cool shelter from the busy streets outside.

Appreciate the airy setting inside the church, with vaulted ceilings and light penetrating the many windows on all sides. Glorious stained glass provides the interior with a colorful contrast to the somewhat somber façade.

If you are on a tour follow a docent up a spiral staircase to the church’s roof and enjoy the unobstructed views of the old town.

The church’s name means “St. Mary of the Sea.” The structure, which stands on a former Roman amphitheater, inspired author Ildefonso Falcones’ 2006 novel Cathedral of the Sea.

The church nave is open to the public for free Monday through Sunday from morning until evening, with a midday break. A ticket for the guided tour includes entry to the crypt and choir.

To reach the Basilica de Santa María del Mar travel by metro to the stops of Jaume I or Barceloneta and walk for a few minutes. You can also take the train to the nearby França Station. Explore the surrounding area for other treasures such as the Museu Picasso de Barcelona, the Parc de la Ciutadella and El Born Centre de Cultural.
