Andong is the Capital of the Korean Spirit, a place where the legacies of ancient dynasties remain prominent in daily life. The capital of the North Gyeongsang Province commands a scenic position on the banks of the Nakdong River and in the shadow of the Taebaek Mountains. Delve into the history of masked dances at the Hahoe Mask Museum. Cross the river to admire the views from Buyongdae Cliff and book in at the Ogyeonjeongsa House hanok guesthouse. Visit the Confucian school called Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy.
Centuries-old temples sit in solitude on the slopes of the Taebaek Mountains. At Bongjeongsa Temple Joseon and Goryeo-era architectural styles blend harmoniously. Admire the Buddha stone carving at Yeonmisa Temple.
In the city center, the food, fresh produce, clothing and jewelry vendors at local markets show a more lively side of the city. Be sure to sample gangodeungeo (salted mackerel) and jjimdak (braised or steamed chicken). With religious shrines, such as the Seven-Story Brick Pagoda in Sinse-Dong, lining the streets and manhole covers decorated with Hahoe masks, the city never loses sight of its roots.
Andong is about a 3-hour journey by train or bus from Seoul. Trains also travel from Busan, Daegu and Gwangju. A sign at the train station translates to Peaceful East and you’ll feel the peaceful ambience of Andong the moment you arrive.
