Follow the ancient city ramparts of medieval Bremen and see preserved 18th-century houses, art museums and theaters along the historic promenade.

Known to locals as the Cultural Mile, Am Wall is a fascinating Old Town strip that contains some of the city’s best-known cultural institutions. Formerly a part of the 17th-century fortification built to protect the city, the fascinating promenade that you can walk along today contains a streetscape that showcases heritage architecture and cultural treasures. As you stroll along this historic stretch of the Altstadt (Old Town), you’ll find historic buildings, the homes of noteworthy Bremen townspeople and 19th-century landmarks.

Beginning on the northerly end of the east-west street in downtown Bremen, you’ll come across the leafy expanse of pretty Wallanlagen Park. Stroll through the grassy parkland dotted with trees and flowerbeds. The park is also home to the Mühle am Wall, a stunning windmill dating back over a century.

Walking southeast, you’ll have the pretty 19th-century gardens and historic city limits on your left and the intriguing Am Wall streetscape on your right. See the Steinhäuser Vase monument and a collection of preserved 19th-century buildings. This historic quarter contains the former homes of many of Bremen’s well-heeled residents.

Continue south to find the grand Bremen Public Library and a selection of shops and cafés. The stunning Kunsthalle Bremen (Art Gallery Bremen) is also located here. Admire its symmetrical neoclassical design and check out what’s showing in the exhibition halls. Book tickets to a performance at the Bremen Theater am Goetheplatz next door to the Kunsthalle and enjoy the city’s latest cultural offerings with theater productions and music concerts. A 19th-century former prison building now houses the Wilhelm Wagenfeld House and its intriguing exhibitions focused on art and design.

The Am Wall district is easy to reach by tram and bus lines that serve the streets directly behind it in Bremen’s Old Town and Mitte areas. Am Wall is free to visit however, some attractions have admission fees. Enjoy the green lawns of Wallanlagen Park in the summer or see the pretty historic architecture dusted with snow in the wintertime.
