  • Joseph Winthrop Holley, born in 1874 to former slaves in Winnsboro, South Carolina, founded the institution in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. W. E. B. Du Bois inspired Holley to return to the South after he read Du Bois's writings on the plight of Albany's blacks in The Souls of Black Folk. Holley relocated to Albany to start a school. With the help of a $2,600 gift from the Hazard family, Holley organized a board of trustees and purchased 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land for the campus, all within a year. The aim of the institution at the time was to provide elementary education and teacher training for the local Black population. It was turned over to the state of Georgia in 1917 as Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year agricultural and teacher-training institution. In 1932, the school became part of the University System of Georgia and in 1943 it was granted four-year status and renamed Albany State College. The transition to four-year status heavily increased the school's enrollment. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program, a prelude to the school being upgraded to university status in 1996.

The location was convenient to why we were there. Front desk rep was not present when we first arrived. The rep wasn’t the friendliest, but she wasn’t the rudest. We did not eat breakfast. We were just ready to go. We did not sleep well. Our neighbors stayed up all night. It must have been 10 people in one room…mixture of adults, kids, and a baby or two. They were up past 1am talking, playing, and disturbing the environment. I know because the noise woke me up off and on. It finally stopped of course after 6am when we had to get up. I can typically deal with what comes with staying in a hotel. I’m not one to just complain. This was

We were most impressed with the Manager Ms. J. Wilson at the Front Desk. She was so welcoming and full of hospitality. Always had a friendly greeting and a sincere desire to be sure we were pleased with our stay at this property. Our room was perfect. Very clean. The bed was super comfortable; linens and pillows were clean and fresh. Shower was hot with good pressure and hallway was quiet. Breakfast was delicious and very generous in the quantity of selections.

Great atmosphere!

The lobby was nice and clean when I entered and the person that greeted me and assisted me at the desk was friendly. The room was clean and spacious for me and three of my grandchildren (ages: 7,5, &3). We had a comfortable stay.

I didn’t like the fact that housekeeping came into my room before checkout without knocking. Corners of bathroom floors were dirty also other than that very comfortable place. Quiet , welcoming and nice staff.

The staff was very kind and considerate. The breakfast was excellent. The room was very clean. The outside was attractive. A suggestion…the water pressure on the 3rd floor could use a re-evaluation.

We arrived at 3:20PM and our room was not ready. Didnt get into our room until 4:30! Breakfast was ok...very limited options and always seemed empty, like the rush just happened, but we were there at 7:30AM, breakfast starts at 7AM. Requested extra pillows(pillows are too soft and flatten out immediately), the staff could only find 1 extra pillow!! Really!!??? Hotel was clean, but would try different hotel if we return to area.
