The history around the archipelago is fascinating, especially related to the 3rd-century Battle of the Aegates Islands. Learn how the Roman troops defeated the Carthaginians. Find out about the islanders’ relationship with the fishing industry, with tuna the central focus. Among the annual events is the summertime Mattanza in Favignana, when fishermen massacre countless migrating tuna fish. While this was a common ritual during the industry’s heyday, today’s event is primarily a tourist spectacle.
The archipelago is located off Sicily, in the southwestern part of Italy near the toe of the country’s famed boot shape.
