Canalta Hotel Cochrane

"We were here for two weeks and overall had a great stay. We really like the Canalta chain, especially the included breakfast and updated mountain-inspired decor. The bed was very comfortable, although the pillows were the typical terrible hotel pillows that leave you with a crooked neck. We also liked the hard flooring and exterior door in our main-floor room. The pool and waterslide were heaps of fun, and we loved the games room with free old-school video games, pinball, foosball and board games. Some pool and hot tub areas could use updating, especially the hot tub, but overall it was pleasant. Swimming lessons run weekdays around 6–8 p.m., although guests can still use the pool. It can feel awkward sharing the space during lessons, but that’s more an issue for those taking lessons. Breakfast had lots of hot and cold options and was always well stocked, although basically the same each day. Our only real complaint was housekeeping. By day 8, we had to demand our floors and shower be cleaned. For the price and the fact it’s a hotel, we shouldn’t have to do this ourselves. We stayed with two dogs, which we paid extra for, so the floors needed more attention. They were eventually vacuumed/swept but never washed. We also found quite a bit of dog hair in the bedding after it was changed, so we assume the clean bedding was on the floor. A proper top-to-bottom clean after 5–7 days should be policy. Other than the lacklustre housekeeping, we would recommend staying here."

"I really thought the room size was wonderful. I found that sometimes the front desk staff had scowls on their faces and were not very approachable when you had a problem. I thought the cleaning staff was amazing to talk to and although they had a policy to go green by not changing the towels out every three days unless you made a special request for it to be otherwise they did not necessarily come in every day and make up the room and take away things like the dirty dishes and on some days did not restock the room with clean mugs for the coffee or tea. It was easy to find and for the most part very clean. I did not use the pool as most of the time there were screeching children in there and it’s a very small area. I did however use the gym and I like that. They had everything you needed. The other thing that I thought was really different was that they had a games room filled with all sorts of games, electronic and board. They provided breakfast at Smitty’s with a coupon. Breakfast with the coupon was limited to eggs, bacon, or sausage and toast or pancakes and coffee. Alternatively, you were able to go in and use a coupon to order whatever you want off the menu and they take $12 off your meal. I was a little surprised to hear, however, that when you use a coupon in the first scenario above, the lovely and hard-working staff at Smitty’s, who like anyone else rely on their tips does not sometimes get tips because people use the coupon and the servers are not tipped."
