Peruvudaiyar Aalayam, Big Temple (locally known as "Thanjai Periya Kovil") is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is also known as RajaRajeswara Temple Rajarajeswaram and Peruvudayar Temple. It is one of the largest temples in India and is an example of Dravidian architecture during the Chola period. Built by Raja Raja Chola I and completed in 1010 CE, the temple turned 1000 years old . The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Great Living Chola Temples", with the other two being the Peruvudaiyar Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara temple. The temple stands amidst fortified walls that were probably added in the 16th century. The vimanam (temple tower) is 198 ft (60 m) high and is one of the tallest in the world. The Kumbam (the apex or the bulbous structure on the top) weighs around 80 tons.There is a big statue of Nandi (sacred bull), carved out of a single rock measuring about 16 ft (4.9 m) long and 13 ft (4.0 m) high at the entrance.[ The entire temple structure is made out of granite, the nearest sources of which are about 60 km to the west of temple. The temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu.

The hotel is close to the Temple. But it’s in a noisy marketplace that you can hear the vendors (they use a megaphone to shout). The WC was constantly leaking. They fix it after complaining but the leaking starts again with use

The AC in the restaurant was switched off to save electricity cost and I was sweating a lot during breakfast. No fan and no power outlet to connect to anything. Very disappointed. Next time I will not be staying here for sure. I don't mind paying extra. I need AC to work.

The hotel facilities were average to good. The staff were helpful. It would be useful to provide laundry ironing services for sarees or borrowing of an ironas many guests visit Thanjavur for temples.

Very nice hotel in Thanjavur very close to the Brihadisvara Temple. The bus station is behind the corner and the train station a short tuk tuk ride away. Good internet, the hotel has 2 restaurants: one vegetarian and one both vegetarian and non. I tried the vegetarian and it was too class.

Nice stay on my road trip to south India

Positively charmed by the kindness of the personnel. From receptionist to bellboy, everybody was so friendly. It made me in a good mood and the joy continued with the visit of the temple and the palace.

Great Location and Friendly Staff

Right in the heat of the city within easy walking of the Temple and the Grand Palace. The bazaars and shops are right there. You are in the frenetic mad world of the Indian road system and it's just great. For a really local experience the location was just right.

Average hotel in busy central location

Good lobby and communal areas but rooms outdated and somewhat dirty, dark and dinghy as windows can't be opened far and open out to concrete noisy surroundings. Location in central busy area not conducive to peace and quiet or light and dust free stay.
