Relax amid the delightful surrounds of a city square that boasts water features and a clock that plays flamenco music.

Tendillas Plaza is Cordoba's main square, a large pedestrianized space lined by trees and modern buildings. Visit this picturesque part of the city to hear its musical clock and to enjoy a snack or a meal in a café or restaurant.

Go to the middle of the square for the equestrian statue of Don Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba, a Spanish general and statesman who died in 1515. He was nicknamed El Gran Capitan, or the great captain, because of his numerous military victories. This magnificent monument was created in 1920 and is surrounded by water jets that are illuminated at night. The square's other statue is on top of the Union and the Phoenix building.

See and hear the flamenco clock which was installed in 1961. Instead of chimes, it plays short excerpts of flamenco music by Juan Serrano, a guitarist and Cordoba native. During the hot summer months cool off in the series of water jets that shoot up from the pavement.

Sit on a bench under the shade of a tree or unwind in a café or restaurant lining the plaza. From your seat enjoy the view of the square.

If your Cordoba vacation coincides with the Christmas period head to the plaza for its Christmas market. Peruse stalls laden with seasonal foods, presents, cheeses and candies. On New Year’s Eve, the plaza hosts the biggest party in the city. As the clock strikes midnight thousands of revelers eat 12 grapes each, corresponding to the 12 months of the coming year.

With its central location, Tendillas Plaza is well served by public transportation and is a starting point to see many of Cordoba’s most popular attractions. From here walk a few minutes south for the Jewish Quarter and the Old City or browse the stores of Calle Jesus Maria and José Cruz Conde, two pedestrianized streets leading off the square.
