Great place for our short visit to the Orkneys! Very close to the ferry service, easy overnight parking, very close to most of the Neolithic sites we wanted to see, and great breakfast each morning.
We had a lovely time at The Royal Hotel. The staff were all very nice and chatty. The breakfasts were amazing and the room was very comfortable. We would highly recommend The Royal Hotel to anybody planning a visit to Stromness.
Breakfast was delicious -lots of cooked breakfast choices plus yogurt, fresh fruits and juices, croissants, bread and more. The internet though was nearly nonexistent and totally useless for doing anything important. Location was great.
Central location, clean spacious room. Excellent breakfast choices, food was excellent. Great location to visit Skara Brae, Ring of Brodgar, Standing Stones and Mae Showe.
Beautiful old hotel with fantastic friendly staff and one of the best full breakfasts we’ve had in the UK. It can be noisy with the pub downstairs (we were on the 1st floor) and the proximity to the other buildings. Dinner at the Ferry Inn which is the sister hotel was incredible. Make sure to have the scallops.

Staff are excellent room was clean. Wifi intermittent
There’s a back bar that’s bright and comfortable (ask the bartender how to get through). The rooms were small but comfortable. The people were so friendly in this little town. Great food but everything closes early. Far fewer tourists here. It’s a great stop!

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, amenities
Great location on main street in heart of Stromness, very convenient for the bus to Kirkwall and hiring bike.
The staff were very helpful and breakfast service was excellent.
Unfortunately there was a problem with the lighting in the bathroom, which without a window for natural light was very dim.
Nice room on top floor; unfortunately no lift. Good facilities except no bath. Breakfast was included and this was hearty and served with a smile. Food was high quality. There was nowhere to dine in the evening and eating out options in Stromness are limited so we’d recommend booking meals before you start your stay. There was nowhere to park at the hotel but we found a free long stay car park above the hotel - though the path was treacherous in wet weather. This must be a great place to stay if you need the ferry but otherwise I’d recommend staying more centrally in Kirkwall.
Clean, well-appointed, comfortable, quiet. Right in the center of Stromness, 5 minute walk from the ferry. Ours was a twin, two flights up. Only knock is no lift.
Quick check-in and very comfy room. Hotel is situated only 2min walk away from ferry terminal.
Rooms were clean and bigh enough for us two and our luggage. Freshly prepared breakfast- nice!
BUT the hotel has a bar on the ground floor and at 2 nights (out of 3) we really struggled to fall asleep because of the loud music and talks.
I really love bars, but I also expect hotel rooms to be quiet (at least after 10pm).

This is one of the few places to stay in the ferry port of Stromness, Mainland Orkney. The staff (and pretty much everyone on the island) are extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is well-located close to the ferry to mainland Scotland. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The included breakfast is marvelous! The main drawbacks are that the building is old, so there is no parking and no elevator. The hotel is staffed only by the breakfast servers and then the bartender, so checking in is slightly confusing. The sister hotel, The Ferry Inn, responds promptly to any concerns however and is very helpful. I would definitely stay here again!
Great stay…..wonderful large updated room and bathroom. Large windows…..lots of light and great shades for night. Check in was simple. Bar on site. Great breakfast included…..so many good choices for a hit breakfast.
Parking was the only concern for us…..but turned out to be easy. We parked at the ferry terminal….had to move our luggage but only 2 minutes away. Yes the terminal charges but when we parked at 4PM one day could pay till noon the next day.
Supper was offered at their companion inn….The Ferry Inn….2 minute walk. Make reservations. Was a great place to eat with great good with great service.
This is a friendly place with clean pleasant rooms and a nice breakfast. However, it isn’t really a hotel, more a pub offering bed and breakfast. When I booked it advertised a restaurant, but this had closed down by the time we arrived, and we had to book dinner in a sister hotel nearby. Not a big issue, but as there are only two restaurants in town you have to book early. We found here that like many places in Orkney there seems to be a serious staff shortage. The same lovely lady who served breakfast also ran the bar all day and tried to cover reception duty. She was fantastic (older lady with long hair) but struggled to cover everything. However, we would stay again, and it seemed much nicer than the other hotel in town.
Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Royal Hotel in Stromness. The location is excellent. Close to ferry, buses and shops. Breakfasts were always very good. Decor in room very well done with interesting artwork. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Dinners at sister hotel "Ferry Hotel" extremely good. Architecture and historical photographic history of The Royal and Stromness very interesting.
Good location in the centre of Stromness, OK for a short stopover, no meals on site but some availability at the partner Ferry Inn just along the road. Fairly limited eating places in the area.
This was the nicest hotel we’ve stayed in so far!!! Looks like they just renovated. They recommended well in advance that dinner reservations should be made and the best place to park the vehicle. 5 big stars!!!
