Strobl

Travel Guide

A town square with a fountain, benches, and buildings with green shutters.
A wooden house on stilts by a calm river, surrounded by lush greenery and a large building in the background.
A lakeside town with buildings, a dock, and mountains in the background.
A wooden building with vertical siding and two windows with shutters.
A wooden houseboat on a lake with a wooden deck and railings.
Relax on the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee in this quiet, upmarket alpine village surrounded by lush pastures, hiking opportunities and natural beaches.

The beautiful village of Strobl is one of the hidden gems of Lake Wolfgangsee. While away the days lounging on the natural beaches, soaking up the tranquility of the lake, exploring the handful of cultural attractions and hiking in the rolling green meadows.

The village presents an enticing blend of old and new. Walk past charming old country houses and art nouveau villas, which sit side by side with plush modern hotels. While other quaint lakeside villages such as St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen receive more visitors, Strobl manages to retain a quieter atmosphere.

Get a better understanding of the region’s past at the Museum of Local History or Lipphaus Abersee. This lovely little folk museum is located on the Breitenbachbauer farm and dates to around 1500. The Lipphaus was inhabited through to 1977 when it was turned into a local folk museum.

Soak up the village’s artsy vibe with a visit to Deutsch Villa, an art center with an impressive collection of contemporary art. Surrounded by sprawling parkland, the Tuscan-styled villa in which it is housed dates back to 1896. The building was an aristocratic summer residence and a government-owned training school before serving as a museum.

Outdoor adventures abound in the vicinity of Strobl. Hike in the Postalm mountain pasture, the largest in Austria and often considered one of the most beautiful high plateaus of the Eastern Alps. Try angling in the crystal-clear waters of the lake or set off on a traditional boat to explore neighboring villages.

If you visit during the winter months then get into the festive feeling at Strobl’s Christmas market and celebrations. For some year-round entertainment, head to the Laimeralm, an original alpine hut dating back to the 17th century. Enjoy a meal, a few drinks and some live Austrian folk music.

Strobl is located on the southern shore of Lake Wolfgangsee in the Salzkammergut. Drive from Salzburg in under an hour. Alternatively, public buses are an easy and efficient option. A car is needed to explore the surrounding countryside.

"Very close to train station and main bus stop and places to eat. Fridge inside the room didn’t work and they didn’t replace it. All food ..."

9.2/10 Wonderful! (532 reviews)
"The apartment was very nice and in an ideal location. The air conditioner in the bedroom was broken so the apartment was hot every time we came back. They provided two fans which helped a bit. Also there is no microwave or any appliances for heating up food. Other than that the stay was great."
