The place was just lovely. We had a great time with the family with a 3 nights stay. So we had the time to enjoy Matenga cultural village on our way in. Then, we stayed the 2 next days at the Wide Horizons Retreat. Kids played in the pool, we walked the dam and the mountains and even played tennis.
The place was so clean and the staff was cleaning the facilities everyday. They even was my car while we were walking!
We came with a small car and followed the road suggested by our guest. It was doable, but a 4x4 or a high jack car might be better.
Views are spectacular and staff are v nice (although poorly trained). Sadly a fire gutted most of the buildings and owners seem to have lost heart/budget leaving burned debri, piles of broken bottles etc lyng in the shells of buildings. Looks nothing like the pictures. There are 2 v nice separate chalets so if you are offered one and can ignore the burned buildings it could be fine.Roads are as bad as stated -impossible without a 4x4 and adbertised rock pool is very muddy - we couldn'ts swim in it (altho we normally enjoy swimming in natural pools, rivers etc) .Sad and I hope the owners can rebuild it as it is a beautiful location.
One of a kind place! Absolutely stunning environment and views, comfortable and original room (we had the Aloe room), amazing nature all around, super helpful staff, beautifully cared for.
Really you have to go there to understand. We went at a quiet time when we were the only guests which only added to the calmness and beauty.
Only thing is - getting there is an adventure in itself - so take your time and don’t be in a hurry so it’s enjoyable rather than stressful! We advise not to try and take the “high clearance” route as Google maps sends you the wrong way, so either get directions or take the “low clearance” route and enjoy the journey!
We booked a normal room and received the Go-go room (the old owners bedroom. This room didn't approach the hotel standards at all. The mattress was on the floor. Not properly curtains. No chair in the room. No daily clean and fresh towels. We complained about this and Ginger, the hosts, did her best to satisfy us in every way. Despite the efforts of the host, they shouldn't give us the go-go room. The view of the room was amazing and also the place but the room was really not acceptable.
