  • During World War 2, the Japanese used Allied prisoners of war to build a railway from Thailand to Burma so they could supply their army without the dangers of sending supplies by sea. Many prisoners died under appalling conditions during its construction, and the line became known as the 'Death Railway'. It was immortalised in David Lean's 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' which centres around one of the line's main engineering feats, the bridge across the Kwae Yai river just north of Kanchanaburi. Although the film was shot in Sri Lanka, the Bridge on the River Kwai really exists, and still carries regular passenger trains from Bangkok as far as Nam Tok. For anyone interested in 20th century history, a visit to Kanchanaburi and the infamous Death Railway is a must. This page gives all the necessary information for train travel from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, the Bridge on the River Kwai & Nam Tok, along with an overview of what there is to see in the area, including the Bridge Over the River Kwai, the Wampo (Wang Po) Viaduct and the museum at Hellfire Pass (Konyu Cutting). You can see the Bridge on the River Kwai as a day trip from Bangkok using the morning train out and afternoon train back, but it's better to make it a 2 or 3 day trip as there's a lot more to see than just the Bridge. For example, you could take the morning passenger train from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi on day 1, stay a night or two in Kanchanaburi, then take the afternoon train back on day 2 or 3, so you can visit Hellfire Pass (less well known than the Bridge, but not be missed) and travel the Death Railway through fantastic scenery over the dramatic Wampo Viaduct as far as its current terminus at Nam Tok.

Amazing breakfast

Amazing service from all the staff. They were all really friendly and helpful and even helped us with a late check in (closes at 10pm which we didn’t realise). The breakfast in the morning was amazing and far exceeded our expectations. The restaurant was also really nicely decorated and clean and had an amazing view. The whole resort was very clean and well kept. Our only complaint was that we got a twin room when we booked a double, but due to our late check in we didn’t mind and the room was very comfortable.

L'environnement de l'hotel est très joli. Nous avions réservé un rafting familial 4 personnes, très original de dormir sur la rivière. Par contre, nam tok est très isolé et nous étions les seuls clients de l'hotel !

I booked this for my wife and her mom. For the price they had terrible experience. Room was not at all as pictures. Old and run down, hard bad, hard pillows, broken door of the bathroom, toilet flush didn't work. Buffet breakfast didn't have many choices and was poorly organized as far as silverware and placement. Overall, for $70+ a night you can get much better hotel.

Very pleasant resort in a lovely setting. Rooms are adequate, bathrooms simple but work. Rooms could do with a chair in them also river rooms an additional chair would be nice. Very helpful and wonderful staff, thanks in particular to Khun Champ at reception and the restaurant team. Delicious Thai food thank you served in a lovely garden setting. Fantastic and welcoming stay

Thanks to the great service given by staffs, we truly enjoyed our stay at Baanpufa Resort. Good location and nice big rooms. Only downside was that the wifi connection is poor.

La Verdad todo nos ha decepcionado, desde el estado de la habitación, vieja y sucia, al servicio de los trabajadores , bordes y sin respecto. Nada más llegar nos dicen que teníamos que pagar la estancia en efectivo y yo le pregunto porque no avisan el cliente, la respuesta es un silencio general , porque lamentablemente los trabajadores no entienden casi nada de ingles. La gente que ha votado 10 este sitio ha votado con los pies. Horrible .
