Riksgränsen’s huge annual snowfall compelled the small village’s residents to leave in the early 1900s. Later in the century, however, the mountain’s remarkable powder became an attraction for skiers from across Sweden and beyond. Rent snow gear if you didn’t bring your own and buckle in for a day of powder.
Six lifts make navigating Riksgränsen easy. After mastering the resort’s 42 groomed runs, experienced skiers can tackle the area’s magnificent off-piste areas. Explore backcountry slopes and enjoy the still beauty of the snow-laden mountains. Join a guided tour and get a local’s insight into the wilderness. Tackle renowned slopes, such as Uffes Vägg and Rimfors, as well as Nordasfjäll, the host of the Scandinavian Big Mountain Championships every year in May.
Expert skiers might want to check out some of the nearby mountain peaks, 60 of which exceed 3,900 feet (1,200 meters). Book a heli-skiing adventure and be the first to carve through untouched powder.
Riksgränsen’s northern position means its ski season extends especially long into the spring. In late May, ski into the evening on slopes still illuminated by sunlight. Leave some time later in the evening for après-ski relaxation too. Riksgränsen has a fantastic wellness spa, where you can enjoy massage and other treatments. Relax in an outdoor hot tub and try a glass of glögg, the local mulled wine. The resort’s dining options include casual cafés, fine restaurants and bar fare.
Reach Riksgränsen by air via Kiruna Airport. From here, take a 90-minute bus, train or car ride to the resort. Overnight trains between Stockholm and Riksgränsen take approximately 19 hours. The resort offers a range of accommodations, from hostels to deluxe apartment lodgings.
