Raiatea Marina, or Marina Apooiti as it is also known, is the main nautical hub on the island of Raiatea. It is the center of marine activities for this part of French Polynesia, with a wealth of services available to mariners, but it is also a picturesque place to visit in its own right. Raiatea Marina, close to the charming town of Uturoa, is at the northern end of the island, which is in the heart of French Polynesia’s many Pacific islands. The island has been a safe haven for passing sailors for years and today acts as a well-equipped base for sailors and their yachts. Yet those not visiting on board their own vessel will still find plenty to keep them amused in the marina. Wander the harbor walls for amazing views of the Pacific Ocean, or simply relax under a palm tree as you watch the boats bobbing in the water.
Charter a yacht for the day from one of the charter companies based in the marina and, accompanied by an experienced skipper, explore the stunning coastline of Raiatea. Pass by a 19th-century shipwreck, caves, pineapple plantations, gushing waterfalls and a tropical lagoon. There are also day cruises which operate out of the marina.
Try your hand at scuba diving on the reef which surrounds Raiatea and encounter the weird and wonderful local marine life. Several dive centers run their boats out of the harbor so this would be your starting and ending point on a diving day trip. Finish the day with an enjoyable meal in one of the restaurants that line the wharf. Sample some traditional Polynesian or French-inspired cuisine. Finally, enjoy a drink in one of the fun bars as you watch the incredible sunsets.
