Among the cafés and markets of Rimini’s historical heart, you can see a statue that marks the spot where Caesar gave a famous speech to his troops.

Sit in a café with a freshly brewed espresso and watch the locals making their way around the Piazza Tre Martiri as they have done for over two millennia. Stroll around the square and admire the fine architecture, shop for fresh food or browse souvenirs in the busy markets. Don’t miss the statue of Caesar, who is said to have rallied his troops for an attack on Rome at this very spot.

The Piazza Tre Martiri was the center of the ancient Roman town of Ariminium, which dates back to 268 B.C. While it is most famous for being a historical site for the Roman Empire, the square was also the site where three citizens were executed by Nazi forces in 1944. The square’s name name translates to “Square of the Three Martyrs”.

The square is dominated by a large clock tower. This is known as the Torre dell’Orologoi and was built in the mid-16th century. Nearby, you’ll see the distinctive octagonal shape of the Church of San Antonio. Take a moment to admire the attractive marble columns and frescoes.

Walk to the northern side of the square to see the statue of Julius Caesar, a large bronze monument that faces Rome. It is said that he uttered his famous words “the die is cast” at this very spot before ordering an attack on Rome.

Don’t miss the monument for the three victims. Three nooses are carved into the stone and a marker nearby shows the exact place where they were hanged.

Piazza Tre Martiri is a hub of activity. Come to one of the weekly markets and shop for souvenirs or attend one of the many events, concerts and exhibitions that take place in the square.

Piazza Tre Martiri is located in central Rimini, just a short walk south of the city’s other main square, the Piazza Cavour. Several buses and trains stop nearby.
