Nicknamed the “City of Wine and Grapes,” this lovely town is known for its pleasant climate and interesting cultural heritage.

Pécs is one of Hungary’s most beautiful and fascinating cities, home to ancient churches, cathedrals and early Christian monuments. The city’s microclimate gives it a warm, Mediterranean ambiance and creates the perfect conditions for wine and fruit production. Enjoy an ice cream in the town’s main square while viewing Baroque architecture and monuments. Explore historic religious buildings and save time to sample the town’s fine local wines.

Notice the intriguing blend of Islamic and Christian architecture that characterizes the Mosque of Pasha Gazi KassimOpens in a new window, better known as the Mosque Church. The largest building remaining from Hungary’s Turkish occupation, the mosque was appropriated by Catholics in the early 18th century. Look for examples of medieval Middle Eastern architecture, including distinctive Turkish windows, a prayer niche in the southeast wall and attractive geometric frescoes.

Explore the Pécs CathedralOpens in a new window, built in the 11th century during the reign of Hungary’s second king, Peter Orseolory. Notice its neo-Romanesque exterior, which was added during 19th century renovations, as well as modifications made during the Turkish occupation when it was used as a mosque. Admire its exquisite Gothic interior, including its beautiful central altar and the four chapels.

Stroll around the main hub of the city, Széchenyi SquareOpens in a new window, and view its striking Baroque architecture. Notice the imposing Trinity Column, which dominates the center of the square. See the incredible buildings found around the square, including City Hall, as well as monuments such as the porcelain Zsolnay Fountain.

The nearest airport to Pécs is Pécs-Pogány International Airport, but flights to this small airport can be difficult to find. Fly to BudapestOpens in a new window instead and then reach Pécs by train or bus. The city also has excellent train connections with Osijek, Sarajevo and ViennaOpens in a new window. Easy to navigate, most of Pécs’ main attractions can be explored on foot.

Experience the Mediterranean feel and rich history of this delightful town.
