Stroll along the lakeside boulevard, visit the castle and take a trip to a charming island in this historic town.

The crumbling remains of medieval city walls surround the town of Passignano sul Trasimeno. Built around a historic castle, the town overlooks the vast Lake Trasimeno. Relish the remarkable views of the water and the green hills of the rolling Umbrian countryside.

Ascend to the castle at the village’s summit for the best vista of the surrounding terrain. See the bridge that once granted access to the castle. Rival armies from Arezzo, Perugia and Florence attempted to take this military outpost over the centuries. It is not open for tours.

Hear about the history of the town, which was once home to an important airplane factory, the SAI Ambrosini. During World War II, aircraft were tested nearby. Sadly, many of the town’s historic buildings were destroyed in the war.

Take a boat from the pier to Isola Maggiore, the second-largest island in Lake Trasimeno. The island is home to the majestic Guglielmi Castle, which is also known as the Villa Isabella. Capture photos of this imposing structure rising above the island’s dense forest. Walk around the island and watch local fishermen at work. Swim or enjoy water sports in the lake during the region’s warmest season from May to September.

Back on the mainland, view the town’s interesting churches. Among the highlights is the Church of San Bernardino. Inspect its crumbling 16th-century façade, which includes an intact window and portal. Visit the 15th-century Church of San Rocco and the 11th-century Pieve di San Cristofo, which features restored 14th-century frescoes.

Passignano sul Trasimeno is located on the northern shore of Lake Trasimeno in the region of Umbria. Drive northwest from Perugia for about 18 miles (28 kilometers) to get here. Fly to one of the international airports in Perugia or Florence and then connect to this lakeside commune by car or rail.

Passignano sul Trasimeno is a historic gem with wonderful ecclesiastical buildings, a charming town center and easy access to a fascinating island.

What a unique place. Near the top of the hill. Staff service and amenities were all great. Not an easy place to drive to. The taxis drive-in backwards the last eighth of a mile.
